How can child labor be stopped?
Child labor has been decreasing at a rate of 2.2% per year since 2001.
India recently began implementing a country-wide ban on child workers below the age of 14. This affects those who work as domestic help or in the hospitality sector. Those who defy the ban will receive imprisonment for up to two years, and a fine as high as $430. However, despite the ban, there are still millions of children working, and there is no punishment given to those employing them.
India passed their first Child Labor Act in 1986 and had little resulting from it. To this day, it will carry a total of 57 professions named hazardous for children.
Police have gone in to countries, like India, and have rescued hundreds of children at a time. Recently, 200 children were rescued during Hyderabad Raids.
In February 2015, police rescued 400 children from a leather factory in Southern India. The children were put on trains and sent back to their homes.
Helping Organizations
Organizations aimed to help support the rescue of child workers:
- Youth Federation
- ChildFund
- Save the Children
- International Labour Organization
- UNICEF
Each of these groups have made a difference in the lives of the children. They have been able to rescue millions of children from their work in different parts of India. Some have worked with the police to go to India and see the children.
Some children, after they have been rescued, join these organizations to help the children who went through what they did. They want to ensure that as few children as possible have to go through the work and punishment that they received.
