What is Child Labor?
Children, some starting at the age of 5, are forced to work in countries throughout the world. These children are used illegally to perform tasks in factories, agriculture, and other dangerous professions.
How does this affect children?
- 73 million out of 200 million child workers are under the age of 10 -
Most children are harmed and deprived of their childhood by working at a young age. Majority of the child workers do not attend school.
In some circumstances, children are neither fed nor put to bed until their work is finished. Some children, are abused and assaulted by defying the work they are told to do. They become starved and weak with little hopes of being rescued.
Many children, upon rescue, suffer diseases and malnutrition. Those children have to visit special doctors before they are transported back to their homes.
Why does child labor occur?
Laws exist specially to ban child labor, but traffickers still find ways around them. Poverty is one of the main causes of child labor. Many families do not make enough money to support themselves, so they send their children to work for food and money. The parents are oblivious to their children's health. Education is also limited in some countries. Some people believe that having their children work at a young age, will gain them more life skills than if they were to go to school.
Why India?
India is home to the largest population of child workers in the world. There are over 45 million children involved in forced labor. This is nearly 1/4 of the child workers on the planet. Many kids are forced into labor by situations at birth. India suffers in poverty, and they have a lack of education. A large portion of the country doesn't believe in any education for children - mainly girls.
